Cy Young Baseball Cards
You know you’ve had a successful career in your chosen sport when an award is named after you. Cy Young is a name synonymous with pitching excellence.
Young owns the most unbreakable record in professional sports; 511 Wins. The next closest is Walter Johnson with 417.
Young pitched for 22 seasons; from 1890 through 1911, breaking in with the Cleveland Spiders at the age of 23.
Because of the timing of his career (just after the releases of the Old Judge, Goodwin and Allen & Ginter sets), Young appears on very few baseball cards during his playing days.
In fact, for the first 17 years of his pro career, Young is featured on only five cards; 1893 Just So Tobacco, 1898 Cameo Pepsin, 1902 W600 Sporting Life Cabinets, 1903 E107-1 Breisch-Williams Type 1 and the 1906 WG2 Fan Craze.
It isn’t until his final three seasons that collectors have a chance to gobble up a bunch of Young cards. In 1909, Young (along with Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson & Honus Wagner) is one of the prominent attractions in the E90-1 American Caramel, E97-1 & E97-2 C.A. Briggs sets, Colgan’s Chips, E92 Dockman, E92 Croft’s Candy, E92 Nadja Caramel, E92 Croft’s Cocoa and of course the T206 White Borders.
In fact, including pose and back variations, there are almost 20 different Young cards in the T206 series. The following two years, Cy is featured on some of his more memorable cards including his T205 Gold Border card, 1911 M116 Sporting Life and of course his T3 Turkey Red.
With his career over, Young’s final numbers are astounding: 5 times he was a 30 game winner and 15 times he won 20 games in a season (including 9 times in a row). He’s the only pitcher to win more than 25 games in a season for three different teams (Cleveland Spiders, Cardinals, Red Sox) and his 749 complete games may be the most absurd statistic in the history of baseball.
