History of Willie Keeler

It’s crazy to think that March is here once again! After a long year, things are starting to settle down and we’re finally able to enjoy social events again. Most of us probably even know someone who was born during this month, which is a great excuse to get together with loved ones. In addition, there are also a lot of famous athletes that were born during this month. One of the famous players born during this month is Willie Keeler, who was born March 3rd, 1872. Willie Keeler was born in Brooklyn, New York. Keeler, who was nicknamed “Wee Willie”, started playing baseball at an early age, and was even the captain of his high school team. In 1892, he joined a minor league team before being called up to play with the New York Giants at the end of his first season. Although he started as a third baseman, he became a right fielder in Major League Baseball from 1892 to 1910. Keeler played primarily for the Baltimore Orioles and Brooklyn Superbas in the National League, and the New York Highlanders in the American League.

 

Keeler was known for being one of the best batters in history. In fact, he had a .385 career batting average after his 1898 season, which at the time was the highest average in history. He currently holds the 14th best batting average of all time with the average of .341. After a successful playing career, Keeler retired in 1910 and became a scout and coach for the Superbas and Boston Braves.

 

“Wee Willie” was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Because of his star status, there are many Willie Keeler baseball cards available.
