Rookie Cards: Essentials to Know

If you have experience in collecting or trading sports cards, you’ve certainly heard of the term ‘rookie card.” It’s potentially a valuable card worth a lot of money to collectors and dealers. But for those who’ve only recently started this hobby, there may be some questions and confusion. That’s why we’ll talk about some of the most important aspects of rookie cards.

“RC” on The Card

As you can guess, it means rookie card. How’s that important? Well, just because a card has an RC on it, it doesn’t mean it’s the main rookie card. It simply means that the card was issued during the rookie season. Base rookie cards often do not have the value of short print versions of these cards.

Identifying The Rookie Card

The first step is to see if it’s released in the rookie season. Plus, you can search various online databases to see a player’s different cards and when they were released to determine if a card is indeed a rookie card. Some players have rookie cards in multiple years or have prospect cards that hold greater value than their official rookie season cards. Additionally, due to the high volume of products, modern players will often have a specific card that is deemed more valuable than the rest based on a few factors including the type of card, product it comes from and print run. An example of this is Derek Jeter’s 1993 Upper Deck SP foil card which has considerably more value than his other 1993 cards due to the material used on the card which can be damaged more easily than other materials.

Some popular websites used for identifying cards are Google, Ebay and other sports card databases where you can type in the player’s name and get a list of all the cards. Besides databases, you can also visit online forums and collector communities and ask experienced collectors and dealers about a player’s rookie card.

Value in Rookie Cards

Rarity is important because if a card is hard to get and in good condition, it is considered a valuable collectible. In most cases, no brand mass produces the cards of a young, unknown athlete until they prove to be a great success. In today’s world, of course, this is less the case.

Do They Always Have The Most Value?

In many cases, yes. They are a player’s most valuable cards, but other in-demand card types can also be very valuable. Plus, card makers nowadays release limited numbered sets of cards. For example, if a card is numbered 1/5, there are only five of them, and this is the first one. Of course, adding an autograph can be a certain factor that increases the price.
