As discussed in our last article, baseball cards used to be included in packs of cigarettes. Although this ended after World War 1, many valuable cards came from it. Specifically, the T206 set was created in 1909 and was included in cigarette packages all over the United States. These cards were issued with 16 different backs, representing the 16 different tobacco and cigarette brands with which the cards were issued. There are more than 524 different T206 cards in the series, many with multiple back varieties available. (Related topics: selling baseball cards, where to sell baseball cards)
In the pre-war era of cards, the T206 set is the most popular issue. It became so popular to collect because there were over millions of cards printed, making it a very accessible card. Although many were produced at the time, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they were kept. Many were discarded by smokers who had no interest in the cards, while others were eventually thrown out. Today, it’s estimated that 1.5 to 3.0 million T206 cards still exist.
All things considered, it’s not too difficult to go online and buy these cards. Although they are somewhat affordable and easy to find, the prices have actually risen. This is because many collectors are interested in this set. Many collectors bought a couple of T206 cards out of curiosity and got hooked. From there, they started their journey to collect as many T206 cards as they can. As there are so many people who have done the same, it has caused the prices to increase over time.
What does this mean? This means that you can find affordable cards for your T206 set. As you continue to grow your collection, though, some of the bigger stars will be more significantly more expensive. For example, the PSA 5 Cobb used to be sold for $5,000, but was recently sold for more than $26,000. Many other cards have seem similar increases. The most valuable card from this set is the famous Honus Wagner card, which was sold for over $3 million dollars!
