When you’re ready to sell baseball cards, you have to show potential buyers how valuable your cards are. By doing this, they’ll offer you an appropriate amount of money for your collection. One of the ways to show sports card buyers in NJ that your cards are authentic and in good condition is by getting them graded. When you do this, professional graders will rank your card from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest grade. This is what the graders will consider while analyzing your cards.
Centering
When a card is centered, it has equal width on the right, left, top, and bottom widths. Although a card may look centered to the naked eye, it may not be when closely examined. If it is even a little lopsided, it is not considered centered.
Edges
The edges are one of the first areas that will deteriorate when a card isn’t handled properly or ages. Not only should every edge be sharp, but the color should be constant. If the color is fading or there are dents along the edges, the graders will notice.
Corners
The ideal sports card will have perfectly sharp corners even under magnification that make it look brand new. To check this, graders first check the front of the card. They then look at the back of the card to confirm the condition of the corners. The slightest defect will impact the grade of your card; for instance, barely visible white corners could decrease the grade.
Surface
The condition of the surface will be judged as well, as it should also look clean and new. That being said, different cards face different threats. For instance, glossy cards usually suffer from scratches on the surface, while cards made with foil stock are prone to chipping. Cards can also have smeared ink, moisture damage, or even faded autographs.
