Many people have decided to turn collecting baseball cards into an investment. The industry is booming and people are willing to pay more for cards than ever before. Although it’s every collector’s dream, it’s not every day that a card sells for millions of dollars. Honus Wagner, however, has broken the record with his T206 SGC 3 baseball card that recently sold for over $6 million.
Although this was his highest selling card, he also had other very valuable cards, such as his T206 PSA 2, which was sold for $3.75 million, or his T206 PSA 5 that was sold for $3.1 million. As you can see, sports card buyers in NJ are willing to pay big bucks for Wagner’s cards, but why?
Honus Wagner played for the Louisville Colonels from 1897 to 1899 and the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1900 to 1917. Over his 20-year career, Wagner not only won the World Series in 1909, but he also became one of the greatest shortstops in baseball history, which got him inducted into the Hall of Fame. Aside from his amazing career, only around 50 of the T206 Honus Wagner cards have survived, making them rare and valuable. The reason being is that the card was designed by the American Tobacco Company, but Wagner did not want his image included with packs of cigarettes. For that reason, he threatened to take legal action against them if they continued to print his cards.
For that reason, there are not many copies of his T206 cards, which is why sports card buyers in NJ are willing to pay a lot for them even if they are not in great condition. At American Legends, we have experience buying cards of high value. If you have Honus Wagner cards, or other valuable cards, contact us at 914-725-2225.
